About Grey
About
Grey is a former corporate attorney turned self-taught tattoo artist from Chicago. With absolutely no prior background, connections, or apprenticeship in tattooing, she left law in 2022 to pursue a career in tattooing. She specializes in black/grey work, but she is also growing her color portfolio.
History
Grey formed an immediate love for the art of tattooing after getting her first tattoo on her 18th birthday (and subsequently two more that same week). She has been drawing ever since she could hold a crayon, teaching herself new techniques solely through experimentation and observation. She naturally gravitated towards black/white realism, as her niche became large-scale realism pointillism pieces using pen and paper.
Her love for art evolved after being introduced to the world of tattooing. Grey started developing the tattoo artist brain immediately, as she would design all of her own tattoos and then get them tattooed on her by other artists. This eventually transitioned to her designing tattoos for friends as well.
Grey’s artistic endeavors came to a pause after attending law school, passing the bar exam, and practicing at a big law firm downtown. After going through her legal journey, she came to realize that her true drive in life is from creating. With no back-up plan, she decided to leave her law firm and give her art career a chance. She is so grateful for the overwhelming support she’s received from her clients, and she is continuously learning and growing to give her clients the highest quality of work.
Grey’s Tattoo Ideology
Grey believes tattoos should enhance the way you feel about yourself, not be a detriment. This is why she only tattoos when a client is feeling 100% confident in the design, size, and placement. This art form comes with high stakes and great responsibility, and Grey values transparent communication to ensure you leave her studio feeling better about yourself than when you walked in!
As a client many times herself, Grey understands all of the anxieties associated with the tattoo process—from the nerves one gets from being in a new environment, having to meet an artist for the first time, the actual physical discomfort of getting tattooed, etc.
Because of this, she has designed her studio space to be warm and inviting feel in order to shed the first layer of anxiety. Grey wants clients to feel comfortable in her space to make it easier to communicate feelings about a design, size, and placement of a tattoo. Grey is ALWAYS open to these kinds of conversations, so please feel safe enough to vocalize your feelings throughout your appointment!
